Timely advice for small business owners

STATEN ISLAND, NY -- ALL SHORES -- With the economic landscape looking bleaker every minute -- a near-500 point drop on Wall Street and Mayor Michael Bloomberg announcing a laundry list of city budget cuts yesterday -- local entrepreneurs are feeling the crunch.

This Saturday, the College of Staten Island's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be hosting a free seminar to address those concerns and dish out some advice.

The name says it all -- "Business Opportunities in Turbulent Times" -- and the conference is hoping to cover a variety of bases: providing key business tactics, information, tips and motivation.

"We counsel people who come in wanting to do a start-up and others who are already in business," said the center's director, Dean Balsamini.

"Both of these, in many cases, are challenged now with the current economic environment, the loan situation, mainly the inability to be able to borrow commercially, and the uncertainty over the economic policies of a new president."

Balsamini is hoping that by bringing in experienced members from a variety of sectors in the local business landscape to offer consultation, the SBDC can answer those questions for the Island's merchants.

The overall picture of the borough's economy will be addressed by Linda Baran, the CEO of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, who will discuss "The Staten Island Business Climate" and CSI lecturer George Stern, who will speak regarding "The Future of Business Ain't What It Used To Be."

Bob Rose, the vice-president of Commerce Bank, and Ed Piszko, a lending officer with CIT, will present fiscal analysis in "Financial Basics," before Comtel's marketing president Bill Dubovsky provides some know-how with "How to Survive in Turbulent Times."

A panel discussion will conclude the program, which will also be attended by the students from the college's business program.

Open to small business owners and prospective owners, the seminar will run from 9 a.m. to noon with light refreshments following the event. Interested parties can reserve a spot by calling Eileen Sullivan at 718-982-2560, but day-of registration will also be held a half-hour prior to the opening remarks.
